Statement by TheDream.US in Support of Protection for DREAMers
By Gaby Pacheco September 6, 2017
TheDream.US is the nation’s largest college access and success scholarship program for immigrant youth with Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) or Temporary Protective Status (TPS) (“DREAMers”). Through private funds, we have awarded scholarships to over 3,000 DREAMers to support them in their quest for a college education in 75+ Partner Colleges across the nation.
We are deeply disappointed by President Trump’s decision to rescind Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). DACA offered almost 800,000 DREAMers security from deportation and the ability to legally work. These protections enabled these young adults – who came to this country as children – the ability to work, go to college, and give back to a country they call home.
This decision casts not only DREAMers but all us who know them as our friends, neighbors, and fellow employees into a world of uncertainty, angst, and fear. This is not the America we know or want to be.
It is not only cruel but unwise to banish this talented group of young Americans from this country. It is critical to the future economic prosperity of this nation to educate all our promising, highly motivated youth. We have made an investment in these young people and they are our future.
We beseech our Republican and Democratic leaders to act quickly and implement legislation to enable this group of students to continue to live and work in this country without fear of deportation.
We remain steadfast in our belief that DREAMers should have the opportunity of a college education and we will continue to support our 2,800 strong DREAMer Scholars. They want nothing more than a college education and an opportunity to apply their talents, skills, and infinite energy toward helping build a strong social and economic base for this country.
