Last week, we hosted a session on the Florida legislature’s disappointing decision to repeal the out-of-state tuition waiver.
We know this is a stressful time, and we are here to support you every step of the way. The process of creating pathways for you to continue your education will take several months, but we are working hard to find solutions and aim to have clarity before June. Stay strong, and we will keep you informed!

1. What changed with Florida’s in-state tuition policy?
On February 13, 2024, Governor DeSantis signed a new immigration law that eliminates in-state tuition for undocumented students in Florida. Starting July 1, 2025, public colleges and universities in Florida must charge undocumented students who cannot meet the residency status out-of-state tuition.
2. What happens to TheDream.US Partner Colleges in Florida?
If Partner Colleges cannot pay the difference between our award and the full cost of tuition and mandatory fees starting July 1, they will be breaking our agreements and no longer be considered Partner Colleges. TheDream.US Scholarship can only be applied at a Partner College.
3. How does this impact me and my scholarship?
We are still assessing the full impact, but here’s what we know:
- You will continue to have access to your TheDream.US scholarship this Fall if you remain eligible.
- Many of you will need to transfer to a private or online college for the Fall to continue your education.
- We are working to establish agreements with new private and online Partner Colleges and will share updates soon.
4. Can I still qualify for in-state tuition and stay at my Partner College?
It depends on your situation. Some Scholars may still qualify for in-state tuition under certain conditions:
- If you have DACA, TPS, or another legal status, you might be able to keep in-state tuition.
We are working with Partner Colleges to clarify who might still qualify. We will update you as soon as we know more.
5. Will I still have my scholarship after July 1, 2025?
Yes! If eligible, you must renew your scholarship in June to continue receiving funds this Fall – likely at a new Partner College.
6. Do I have to transfer to a new college for the Fall semester?
Most of you will need to transfer to a new Partner College. Your options may include:
- Transferring to a private college in Florida (we are working on new agreements).
- Enrolling in an online college or degree program (we are exploring options).
7. What happens if my major isn’t offered at a new Partner College?
We are working to find new Partner Colleges that offer your current major. If your exact major isn’t available, you may need to switch to a closely related major.
8. What should I do right now?
- Focus on doing well in your current classes.
- Talk to your Scholar Advisor and take as many classes as possible, including summer courses.
- Wait for updates from us before applying to new colleges—we will provide guidance soon.
