Miami, FL – Today, Florida’s State Board of Education is scheduled to vote on a proposed rule to ban undocumented students from attending state colleges. Last week, the Florida Board of Governors voted to move forward a similar Dreamer ban for state universities.

The following is a statement from Gaby Pacheco, TheDream.US President and CEO and a Miami resident:

“Banning Dreamers from Florida colleges is both cruel and counterproductive to our state.

The self-described mission of the Florida College System is to provide ‘access to high-quality, affordable academic and career educational programs that maximize student learning and success, develop a globally competitive workforce and respond rapidly to diverse state and community needs.’

By that standard, the proposed ban of Florida Dreamers is a violation not only of the democratic process and the role of the legislature, but of the core mission of the Florida College System.

Florida colleges should offer talented Florida students who grow up here and graduate from state high schools the opportunity to study and succeed at state colleges and put their degrees to work for the future of Florida.”
