Washington, DC – In a new Substack post, “Dreamers’ Safety Web,” President and CEO of TheDream.US Gaby Pacheco reflects on how college campuses and higher education are offering Dreamers an essential “safety web” and support system at this moment – one that includes but goes beyond the importance of a college degree.
As Pacheco writes:
“For the last several years, I have found myself saying something that surprises people: the safest place a young Dreamer can be is on a college campus.
When people think about higher education, they usually think about jobs, careers, and economic mobility. Those things matter, of course. But for Dreamers living through today’s political uncertainty, college has become much more than a pathway to employment. It has become a safety web.
The past two years have only reinforced that belief. The reason isn’t simply because Dreamers are earning degrees. It’s because colleges and universities themselves have become part of that safety web, providing not only an education, but also a community, advocates, and support when students need it most.
… I believe there has never been a more important time to invest in Dreamers’ higher education. A scholarship is not simply financial aid. It is not only a pathway to a career. It is an investment in resilience. It is an investment in possibility. Most importantly, it is a safety web that allows a young person, even after experiencing unimaginable setbacks, to land, recover, and rise again.
For Dreamers, college doesn’t simply open doors. Sometimes, it catches them before they fall.”
