Washington, DC – The latest installment of Gallup’s annual poll assessing Americans’ attitudes toward immigration and immigrants finds overwhelming support across party lines for providing Dreamers an opportunity to become U.S. citizens.
By an 81-18% margin, Americans support citizenship for Dreamers, described as: “Allowing immigrants, who were brought to the U.S. illegally as children, the chance to become U.S. citizens if they meet certain requirements over a period of time.” Among the key related findings:
Dreamers’ citizenship receives majority support from respondents of all party IDs: 95% of Democrats support Dreamers’ citizenship (74% “strongly”), as do 86% of Independents (48% “strongly”), and 56% of Republicans (23% “strongly”).
Intensity of sentiment is overwhelmingly pro-Dreamer: 50% of respondents “strongly favor” the proposal (the remainder of the 31% in support “favor” but not “strongly,”) while just 9% “strongly oppose.”

Despite the overwhelming and bipartisan support for Dreamers, our nation has been moving in the opposite direction: targeting Dreamers for detention, blocking access to the DACA program, and restricting their higher education and career opportunities. These growing threats not only run counter to what the American public clearly wants, as we see in this polling, but also weaken our economy, hurt our communities, and undermine our values
The answer is an urgent, popular, and long overdue one: enacting legislation like the Dream Act to offer permanent protections and stability for Dreamers and all of us who rely on them.”
