Dear Scholars and Alumni,
I know that for many of us, these election results feel like we are entering into a nightmare. I want to acknowledge the fear, the anxiety, and the deep worry many of you and your families are feeling right now. I’ve been in those shoes, holding my breath, not being able to sleep, over what a changing political landscape could mean—not just for my future, but for my life. In 2016, as I battled cancer, I worried constantly about losing my DACA and the health insurance that helped me pay for my treatment. I remember feeling powerless, like my dreams and my health could be taken away in an instant.
But today, I stand here, not only cancer-free but as a U.S. citizen. I know what it feels like to be vulnerable, to worry about how to protect ourselves and our families in uncertain times. And I want you to know you are not alone in this moment. I, TheDream.US Team, and so many others are ready to stand firm, to be a wall of protection around you. Together, we will not only survive but grow stronger, lifting each other up and holding each other close.
We will be holding space this Friday, Nov. 8 at 5 pm ET for us to get together and process.
As TheDream.US Scholars, you’re part of a community that has your back. When fear tries to close in, remember that we are here, united and unwavering. I am prepared to stand as a shield, to put myself on the line to protect you, because your dreams and your dignity matter.
No matter what – we are committed to seeing you through to graduation and life after college. Your scholarship is here to stay. As Jose Antonio Vargas said, “a college education is its own kind of passport” and we want you to focus on just that.
We are here with love, strength, and courage, and we will not back down. Take heart and know that we are in this together, and we will persevere.
