“Jeopardy!” Clue Shines National Spotlight on Dreamers
Washington, DC — Last night, the quiz show Jeopardy! featured a clue about DACA recipients. The clue asked for the nickname commonly used to refer to those with DACA. The contestant correctly answered, “Who are Dreamers?”
For over two decades — since 2001 — Congress has failed to deliver permanent protections for Dreamers. While nearly half a million people have DACA today, over 100,000 are still waiting for their applications to be processed, and more than a million young people are left out entirely
According to Gaby Pacheco, President and CEO of TheDream.US,
“This clue was a reminder of how deeply Dreamers are woven into the American story, but also of how urgently action is needed to protect them.
With DACA under legal threat and its days numbered, we are seeing more and more Dreamers without protection being detained by ICE. Dreamers such as Ximena Arias Cristobal, the 19-year old Dreamer college student and recipient of TheDream.US National Scholarship who was ineligible for the DACA program and who was recently held in an ICE detention center in Georgia.
To Jeopardy! and its contestants, thank you for reminding America: Dreamers are part of our national story. Now it’s time to write the next chapter and pass legislation to grant them permanent legal protections.”
