TheDream.US: Alejandro Mayorkas Nomination a “Hopeful Sign for DREAMers”

Washington, DC – The following is a statement from Candy Marshall, president of TheDream.US, reacting to the news that President-elect Biden will nominate Alejandro Mayorkas to be secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS):

“During the Obama administration, Alejandro Mayorkas played an essential role in designing and implementing the popular and successful Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which has been life-changing for more than 800,000 DREAMers and has strengthened the country as a whole.

President-elect Biden has committed to immediately reinstate the DACA program and to work with Congress to pass legislation providing DREAMers with a path to citizenship. While our electorate remains politically divided on many fronts, there is a remarkable consensus across parties that we should provide DREAMers with the permanent protections they need to fully contribute to the country they call home.

The news that Mayorkas will be nominated as DHS Secretary is another hopeful sign for DREAMers and a signal that the Biden administration is ready to deliver on its commitments for DREAMers and to strengthen America in the process.”
