The news of Mark Ojakian’s retirement as president of Connecticut State Colleges and Universities [Aug. 12, courant.com, “Mark Ojakian, President of Connecticut State Colleges and Universities, will retire in January”] reminds me of one of this good man’s many great contributions.
I run a college scholarship fund for “the Dreamers” — undocumented students who cannot get federal grants or loans. Fourteen states make their plight worse by denying them in-state tuition, even if they graduated from high school with distinction in that state. In effect this means they can’t go to college. At some state colleges (the University of Georgia, for instance), they are banned from enrolling by law, no matter what they pay.
