Recap: Tax Matters for Immigrants

Thank you to everyone who joined our Tax Matters for Immigrants session last week! You can access the presentation slides here – please note this session was not recorded.

Here are 3 key takeaways from the session:

  1. There are important benefits to filing taxes. Filing taxes demonstrates compliance with federal tax law and may also serve as proof of “good moral character” in immigration cases.
  2. Unsure about filing taxes as an immigrant? Use the “Tax Flowchart for Immigrant Taxpayers” to make an informed decision, and consult a legal expert if necessary. (See slide 5 for flowchart.)
  3. Use a Certifying Acceptance Agent (CAA) if Applying for an ITIN: Working with a CAA means you do NOT have to mail your original identification documents to the IRS. Learn more on our ITIN website.

If you missed the session or still have questions, we encourage you to attend our final Tax Matters for Immigrants session on Thursday, March 19 from 5 pm-6 pm ET.

This session will also include live Q&A and will be hosted by our guest speaker and tax expert, Professor Francine Lipman from UNLV’s Boyd School of Law.
