Tax Matters Session Recap – Key Takeaways and Resources

Thank you to everyone who joined our Tax Matters for Immigrants session last week! You can access the presentation slides here – please note this session was not recorded.

Here are 3 key takeaways from the session:

  1. Filing taxes matters for your immigration future – Filing taxes is not just about filing this year’s tax return. It’s about protecting your future immigration opportunities. Be proactive now by filing taxes accurately and on time to protect your future immigration options.
  2. Report all income for 2025 on your tax return – This includes cash income as well as income reported on a W-2 or Form 1099. Individuals with self-employment income (cash and 1099 income) are responsible for paying self-employment taxes (about 15%).
  3. If applying for an ITIN, use a Certifying Acceptance Agent (CAA) Working with a CAA means you do NOT have to mail your original identification documents to the IRS. Learn more on our ITIN website.

Taking the time to file correctly and understand your options now is an investment in your future! We encourage you to use the resources shared and stay informed as you move through this tax season.
