TheDream.US and Gaby Pacheco React to Introduction of the 2025 Dream Act
Washington, DC – Today, Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) announced the reintroduction of The Dream Act in the U.S. Senate.
The following is a statement from Gaby Pacheco, president and CEO of TheDream.US, the nation’s largest and leading organization supporting Dreamers at the intersection of higher education, workforce development, immigration, and advocacy:
“At a moment when Dreamers are being targeted for detention and deportation and living with rescinded opportunities, heightened fear and growing uncertainty, it’s urgent that Congress finally deliver on the legislative fix that’s two decades in the making by passing the bi-partisan Dream Act.
We’ve already seen what happens when America says ‘yes’ to Dreamers – they excel. Programs like DACA have allowed Dreamers to thrive in school, build lives with certainty, contribute to communities, support their families, and strengthen our economy as college students, business owners, nurses, teachers, and engineers.
The time for temporary measures is over. Instead of standing by idly as we see more Dreamers targeted, detained, and deported or kicking the can down the road and saying we’ll address their status ‘some other time,’ we need to act with urgency for Dreamers and the nation.
We commend Senators Durbin and Murkowski on standing with the strong majority of the American public and presenting a way forward that would deliver enforcement protections, legal status, and a way for Dreamers to plan their futures with certainty.
Even with all the barriers and uncertainties in their way, Dreamers are resilient and undaunted – as our steady stream of TheDream.US program applicants and the stories and successes of thousands of our Scholars and Alumni remind me. Imagine what they could do for our communities and our country if their talents were fully unleashed by passing the Dream Act.”
