Washington, DC – As the Richmond Times-Dispatch reports, Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam is poised to sign into law new legislation that will make Virginia DREAMers eligible for state financial aid starting in 2022. This follows last year’s passage of a law that makes Virginia DREAMers eligible for in-state tuition rates at state colleges and universities.
As Virginia immigrant youth pursue these new higher education opportunities, TheDream.US today offered a reminder of its scholarships for Virginia immigrant youth to attend three in-state schools. The scholarship application deadline for the 2021-2022 academic year closes on February 25, 2021. TheDream.US is the nation’s largest college and career success program for immigrant youth, having provided more than 6,500 college scholarships to DREAMers attending over 75 partner colleges in Virginia and 18 other states and Washington, DC. The organization’s expanded eligibility criteria opens applications to DREAMers who have DACA, TPS or who came to the country before November 1, 2015 and otherwise meet the DACA eligibility criteria.
In Virginia, TheDream.US partners with George Mason University (for community college graduates), Marymount University, and Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA), each of which is dedicated to supporting the higher education needs of DREAMers. According to Candy Marshall, president of TheDream.US: “We commend Virginia for opening the doors of higher education to more Virginia DREAMers. Now is the right time for immigrant youth to go to college. With DACA solidly in place and the potential for legislation that would provide DREAMers with permanent residency, a college education is key to pursuing a meaningful career that will help immigrant youth in Virginia and across America pursue their higher education and career dreams and more fully contribute to the future of our country.”
TheDream.US is proud to support the college and career dreams of Virginia DREAMers such as Aide, a former TheDream.US Scholar who recently graduated from George Mason University and now works as an HIV Prevention Specialist in the state. Aide stated: “College is hard, and you have to work hard, but if you set your mind to it then you will succeed. TheDream.US has given me the confidence to pursue my dreams, and the confidence to know I have people behind me who are supportive of my journey. Remember: you can do it as long as you work hard for it.”
