TheDream.US Reacts to Disappointing DACA Ruling
Washington, DC – The following is a statement from Gaby Pacheco, Director of Advocacy, Communications, and Development for TheDream.US, reacting to today’s ruling from U.S. District Court Judge Andrew Hanen on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.
“Judge Hanen’s ruling is a crushing disappointment for our nation; it underscores the imperative of Congress finally passing long-overdue legislation to deliver citizenship for DREAMers.
DACA has been a life-changing program for hundreds of thousands of DREAMers. Countless classrooms, workplaces, and communities have been strengthened by the expanded opportunities for DREAMers provided by DACA. But for all its successes, DACA does not provide the certainty and permanence that DREAMers — and America — need.
As Judge Hanen’s ruling harshly reminds us today, DACA has never been the permanent answer and DREAMers still are not able to plan their futures in the United States with confidence. Their education, drive, and potential are things our country certainly needs in these trying times.
It’s time to finally deliver legislation that makes DREAMers and their families full citizens of the country they have long called home. The United States will only be made stronger by settling this issue once and for all and delivering citizenship.”
